Can You Drink Tank Water on Acreage

Acreage homes run on town supply, tank supply, or a mix of both, and the plumbing follows the supply: a tank delivers its pressure through a pump or by gravity from its height.

Queensland's plumbing regulator allows rainwater for drinking only where no reticulated town supply exists, because a town supply is the safest and most reliable drinking source. A tank also asks for ongoing care from its owner, since dirt and small organisms can find their way into a private tank and spoil the stored water.

Three parts of the setup matter here:

  • The pump that pushes tank water to your taps. We handle the plumbing side of that connection.
  • The filter that cleans the supply. Swapping a filter cartridge is unregulated work, so anyone can do it, provided the finished job meets the required standards.
  • The tank itself. Our rainwater tank plumbing page covers how a tank ties into the house.

For a filter fitted properly, our water filter installation service covers under-sink, benchtop and whole-house units.

Who Owns the Pipe From Meter to House

You do, from the meter onwards. Every metre of pipe between the water meter and the taps inside the house is the property owner's to keep in repair.

On a standard suburban block that run is short. On acreage the line can cross a long stretch of ground, and the entire run, hidden leaks included, sits with you. Unitywater's responsibility stops at the meter and the street mains; your side of the connection is yours.

The replacement rules are simple:

  • Replacing the supply line to an existing house is notifiable work, which a licensed plumber carries out. The Form 4 must reach the QBCC no later than ten business days after the work finishes, and you keep a copy.
  • Digging the trench and filling it back in are unregulated jobs. Anyone may take on that digging, while the pipe work stays with the plumber.

Pressure Pumps and Long Pipe Runs

Friction is the culprit: the longer or narrower the pipe, the more pressure it loses on the way, so the taps furthest from the meter run weakest.

A pressure pump restores that push at the house end, giving taps and appliances flow you can actually use. Choosing and sizing pumps is its own topic, but the plumbing around a pump, the connections and the lines, is work we do.

Rural zones can also fall outside a supplier's standard minimum pressure at the meter, so it pays to check what applies on your street before blaming the pipework.

Local ground adds to the puzzle. The hard-setting clay over phyllite beneath these hills holds water above itself. A weeping joint in a long run can therefore surface as a soggy patch well downhill of the leak. Rainfall here averages 1048 mm a year, so a wet patch halfway down a Hillenvale Avenue block deserves a proper check before anyone writes it off as weather.

Staying Safe With Bottled Gas

Store and use LPG bottles somewhere ventilated, clear of heat and ignition sources. Keep spare bottles in a secure spot set aside for that purpose, and keep each bottle's valve sealed while the bottle is out of use, empty ones included.

Bottle safety comes down to these rules:

  • A portable barbecue bottle, typically 9 kg of LPG, needs a current test stamp before a refill station will fill it, and stations check the date on every bottle that comes in.
  • Escaped LPG sinks, gathering in hollows and drains instead of drifting away.
  • A rotten-egg odour is the warning sign of a leak, and a cylinder valve is gasfitter's work, not a DIY job.
  • If you smell gas, switch the appliance off, open doors and windows, and leave switches alone. Shut the bottle's valve if the odour stays, and call 000 if the smell persists after the supply is off.

Storage matters most on the bushy blocks near the Arana Hills Fire Station, where council bushfire mapping reaches the forest edge. Connecting a new gas appliance is gasfitter's work too, covered on our gas cooktop installation page.

Acreage Questions From Arana Hills

Call (07) 3523 6417

Who looks after the long water pipe from the meter to my house?

You do. The pipe from the meter to your taps is yours to maintain, and on a large block that covers the whole run, hidden leaks included. Unitywater looks after the street mains and the meter; everything past the meter is the owner's.

Who is allowed to replace the water line from the meter to the house?

A licensed plumber, because that job is notifiable work in an existing home. The plumber lodges a Form 4 with the QBCC within ten business days and gives you a copy.

What should I do if I smell gas near my LPG bottle?

Switch the appliance off and get air moving through open doors and windows, without touching light switches or power points. If the smell stays, close the valve at the cylinder, then contact your supplier or a licensed gasfitter. Call 000 if the smell lingers once the supply is shut off.

Can I repair or swap a gas cylinder valve myself?

No. Gas work belongs to a licensed gasfitter in Queensland, and a cylinder valve counts as gas work. Leave a worn or damaged valve for a gasfitter to deal with.

How much does a new water line cost around Arana Hills?

The length of the run and the ground the trench crosses drive the price most, along with the pipe size and fittings. Your fixed quote, set before work begins, confirms the figure for your block.
